So there's this kid, and he starts school and makes his friends and gets good grades and he starts to notice growing up out of the ground all around him are these monoliths.
These huge ghosts with heads that are the size of semi-trucks jutting out of the ground all around him. He finds that only he can see them.
Anyone else would be scared of this kid thought to himself, I'm special, I'm important, I'm the only one who saw around us is already dead. But actually he sees a being A plus, a new friend, a poet even.
He writes this gigantic ghost with a poem.
I must be helping them the way they're helping me, right?
So he gets a little older and he's thriving and he can see the ghost's elbows now.
High school starts and he goes to a different school with his friends. More opportunities and a first date.
Tells a joke to break the ice with the first person he looks at and he's in love with and it falls flat.
The other kid walks off but later whispered and spreads the news about him being the clown who ruined the joke.
When our boy leaves school that day he notices these massive ghost hands are free from the ground. What did I do?
Next day he steps on someone's shoes. They chew him out and all the ghosts around up to their thighs.
I'm helping them. I'm special. They're climbing out thanks to me.
Soon they stand so tall he has to look straight up to see them.
They're getting closer.
Now it's every F, every friend he can leave and every time he's embarrassed it puts his massive ghost just a little closer to him.
They're getting down to where he can think. By the end of school he can smell their breath.
By the time he can drink he's surrounded wherever he looks by these massive heads all around him swooping and whispering and getting quiet and looking right at him.
One day he spills his drink on the ground and suddenly he can only stand in this room.
He looks up from the floor and the mouth of a ghost is just about touching him and it says, nothing you did made any difference.
